Opening Prayer Examples for Church

An opening prayer sets the tone for gathered worship. It does not need to cover every need. It simply turns the room toward God.

Short opening prayers

1. Almighty God, we gather in Your presence. Open our lips in praise and our hearts to Your Word. Amen.
2. Lord, thank You for bringing us safely here. Receive our worship and renew our faith. Amen.
3. Holy Spirit, settle our minds and prepare us to listen. Amen.
4. Father of mercies, welcome the seeking, strengthen the weary, and unite Your people in love. Amen.
5. Jesus, You are worthy of our attention. Help us worship You in spirit and truth. Amen.
6. God of grace, quiet every distraction and make us attentive to Your voice. Amen.

A fuller opening prayer

Eternal God, from the rising of the sun to its setting, Your name is to be praised. We thank You for life, for salvation in Christ, and for the fellowship of this church. Remove what distracts us. Heal what wounds us. Awaken gratitude in us. Speak, Lord, for Your servants are listening. Amen.

For special moments

• Baptism Sunday: Thank You for new life in Christ. Mark this day with joy and faithfulness.
• Guest-heavy Sunday: Help every visitor feel seen, and help every member extend welcome.
• Hard news week: Be near to those who carry grief. Give Your church wisdom and compassion.
• Ordination or commissioning: Confirm Your calling and strengthen those You are sending.

Guidance

Keep the opening prayer shorter than the pastoral prayer. Save longer intercession for later in the service unless your tradition places it at the start. Speak slowly enough for the room to pray with you.
